I went to YouTube to see Samba Mapangala videos. It hit me that one of the reasons I love to see African music videos is the women dancing. Here’s the thing, in my life the women I love come in all shapes and sizes and I see that mirrored in African music videos, popular Western videos not so much.

Pls fill me in on what ok jazz are talking about in kinsiona? Great song this!
-
Mutunga says:
January 16, 2009, 3:25 am@kabuga:
“Kinsiona” is definitely not in Lingala. It appears to be in Kikongo, just like “Kimpa Kisangameni”. Unfortunately, I don’t understand Kikongo, but once I’m sure I run no risk of confusing it with Lingala, I’ll have a go at it. Indeed, I have bought my first Kikongo book “Palons Kikongo” (Let’s Speak Kikongo” but I haven’t got into it yet.
Anyway I remember reading that Franco composed “Kinsiona” in memory of his late brother, Bavon Marie Marie. -

January 16, 2009, 3:26 am@gilly, Daniel and other “Jazz Band experts”:
Please listen to Ok Jazz’s “Naseki Mingi” and see if it reminds you of a song in Kiswahili with exactly the same melody. It might have been the work of Atomic Jazz Band but I don’t know for sure. I’ve posted two versions of the track. The first one is a vinyl-cd-mp3 rip whereas the second one is ripped from Youtube using “Audacity” and sounds as we would have heard it on transistor radio in the 1970s.
Do you happen to know the title of Kiswahili song with the same melody? And if you have a copy of the track, could you kindly share?
I’m sorry I’ve forgotten the lyrics, but one recurrent phrase in the song is “Nimechoka wo, wo, wo, wo.” -
gilly says:
January 19, 2009, 3:10 am@Mutunga,
That melody was used in a swahili track by Dar es salaam jazz band. Im not certain about the track tittle but I promise to upload it hear soonest i find it. I can recall the lyric ‘ hata mkisema naye, hata mkisema naye yoyoo, siri ya nyumbani hamtaijua……….
Kilwa jazz and Daressalaam jazz were famous in copying the melodies from then Zaire popular tracks.
The track below by Kilwa jazz, (Nacheka Kilwa Leo), late 1960s was from a melody by Afican jazz (?): http://www.sendspace.com/file/fovs2l
Another by the same band (Kilwa), ‘Napenda Nipate Lao Nafasi’ : http://www.sendspace.com/file/hhfco8 , is infact ‘Mokolo Nakokufa’ by Tabu Ley Rochereau (www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdc1TIQcLoQ)

There is a track released in Nairobi late 1980s by then residing Congo musicians titled ZAINABU.
I remember a few lines:
Asubuhi unaenda masomooo, Namimi nyumbani nafikiri,
Ikiwa wazazi watakubali, nikuoe Zainabu mpenzi, ………….
Kwa kuwa tumeshakubaliana, tuombe kwa mola tubarikiwe………….Any contribution/ posting is highly appreciated

http://www.sendspace.com/file/34wd0c
@mutunga
What are they actually singing about, Pregnancy? (mimba in swahili)
-
Mutunga says:
February 6, 2009, 5:34 am@gilly:
What Swahili speakers call “mimba” is called “zemi” in Lingala.
“Mimba” is a woman’s name. The song is about the suffering of a man in love and a marriage on the rocks “lobi na lobi libala esilaka”. The narrator, a man, has had enough of his wife’s pride “okomi lofundu” and care-free attitude. For him, the relationship has been a state of bondage “tokomi baumbu mpo na biso basi”, a cross that he has been carrying “kuruzu ya bolingo”. She has dishonoured him “obebi lokumu”. He tells her to go well “kendeke malamu, mama”. A line that wraps up the song is “Bolingo eloko ya lisano te yeba” which in swahili would be “Jua kwamba mapenzi si kitu cha mchezo” (”Know that Love is not something to play with.” Truly one of Mangelepa’s greatest hits! -
