musical link: Smörgåsbord I
I am afraid that it has to be all music, no talk this week. On to the show: I would still love to get some comments though. I read them all.
Bart at Surface Scan pointed me to this one: Mwana Masongo by Pan Asafrikanada.
Pan Asafrikanada - Mwana Masonga
(You can also find it here)
Tony Allen - Crazy Afrobeat off his off his 2002 CD titled Home Cooking
Wicky Mosh feat. Maji Maji -Atoti
TX Seleleka in Watoto: you can find the lyrics and their translation here.
Remmy Ongala Orchestra Super Matimila - Asili ya muziki
Next up, Watafiti in Umoja: you can find the track lyrics and translation here
From AfroJazzFunk Round 2, here are The Monstars with Funny Saga.
Nyboma Mwandido on Double Double. You can buy his music at Calabash Records and on Amazon.
Jamnazi Africa in Riziki
Musa Juma and Orchestra Limpopo
Musa Juma and Orchestra Limpopo - Aggrey
Musa Juma and Orchestra Limpopo - Christina
[edit]
David asked for Musa Juma in mp3 so here you go.
Musa Juma and Orchestra Limpopo - Aggrey
[end edit]
As far as I am concerned, track of the day is Bamboo and Prezzo in Shika Nare

April 30, 2007, 9:24 amRE: Mwana Masonga… OK, I can appreciate a new mix that brings a new sound, a new beat to an old tune but this one seems pointless to me. It’s 6:19 of a small part of Sukuma bin Ognaro’s Sukuma Songa. I’d rather hear the original. As an example of a great new mix project, I can point to Cheb i Sabbah’s two remixes of songs on Vieux Farka Toure’s new CD (samples available on eMusic.com).
Doug,
I did not know about the Ongaro track (and in all honesty, I am embarrassed to let it be known that I have none of his music …) so I really have nothing to compare it to. Not having heard the original track, I found the concept interesting especially since I really like long tracks.
It has been iTunes and vinyl/CD conversions up to this point for me but I am finally breaking and getting an eMusic account so I will check out Cheb i Sabbah’s work.

April 30, 2007, 7:52 pmWow Steve!: This is indeed a feast as David says. You have quite outdone yourself this time thanx very much. I hear the “Riziki” track is quite the inthing in some Nairobi clubs. I wonder what the phrase at the end ” e mambala yi ekerano sidoia ee” means. It is neither Swahili nor Luo. Any ideas? I am still working on sending you “cucu wa gakunga” and i also found a les wanyika track called “matamshi yako rafiki” from zamani za kale which i will send to you.
David - if u need Musa Juma cds I can get u some. You can reach me at musa dot okoth at yahoo dot ca.
Musa,
thanks for the kind offer. I will definitely drop you an email.
Interesting thing about Riziki is that now that some time has passed, I think I like it better than I am not sober - I think that this is mainly because it is a much more relaxed style and the guitar work really does something for me.
No idea what that phrase means either. I thought that it was Luo when I first heard it. Can anyone help us translate it?
I will be waiting for the Wanyika track (any Wanyika track is gold to me!) and Ndichu.

Musa, your offer is kind in the extreme. Will email you when I get more time at home to see how this can be done. -

May 3, 2007, 12:58 amSteve, I’m just reading your response after a few days. My comments weren’t intended to be harsh or critical. Actually, I find it very interesting to discover this kind of remix (much like your Jefferson Airplane “White Rabbit” remix) and I’m always appreciative when I hear something new like this. You can check out that Sukuma bin Ongaro track on Guitar Paradise of East Africa. And, yes, Sukuma is on eMusic.com as well. You don’t need to join emusic to listen to the samples either.
Doug
For me, a huge part of this website is the learning experience. When I started doing this more than a year ago, I knew the music but nothing at all about the music. Now, I know a little more and every interaction I have with experts such as yourself allows me to learn yet a little bit more.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

May 4, 2007, 2:33 pmYou know there’s a special date every Furahiday marked on my timetable to visit this blog for some musical updates!
Oh and btw, I ordered the “Rhumba On The River” book the other day (thx for the hint, Steve) + came across this trouvaille on Ebay … US$ 31!
@Doug: I still remember your site from ~ 1997, so nice. Do you have any contact with other producers such as Günther Gretz (of PAM) or Alistair Johnston?
-
Doug says:
May 5, 2007, 11:21 amFor JKE, the site (www.eastafricanmusic.com) is still there but, unfortunately, it hasn’t progressed much beyond 1997. Those were the days when I only half-gainfully employed so I had plenty of time to work on it.
I’ve met Gunter long ago but don’t really know him personally. Alastair and I correspond regularly and occasionally collaborate on a project like his Polygram Kenya discography. And I stay in close contact with my friend, Werner Graebner, the editor of the Zanzibara series. His new Zanzibara 3: Ujamaa will be coming out shortly (in Europe anyway) with some classic Tanzanian dance music of the 60s. -

May 23, 2007, 10:12 pmI think that there was a new version of “Double-Double” some time ago, maybe by the Soukous Stars (or maybe just Lokassa). Could you post that one too?
Thanks and keep up the good work!

September 2, 2007, 12:38 pmSteve - I’ve been a bit out of the loop but I just found my way back to this post. I totally agree that the track we posted/remixed (Mwana Masongo) was a bit long on its own and the original is still smoking but check this out.
It’s a mixed cd I put together for some friends who donated to a bike-a-thon I was part of for $$ for bicycle ambulances in Uganda. Anyways, you and your readers are welcome to peruse the page - preview the mix and if anyone feels moved to donate - there are some links there.
I’ll be in Guelph in a few days - if I get to Kitchener maybe we could connect.
Thanks for the great work on your site and the recent video footage is awesome!

Nice, thx for the updates!
Bart’s house approach reminds me of some projects I’ve been procrastinating for a while now…
