feed the addiction: East African fiber and telecoms, The case for contamination, “Line Rider” and more . . .
+ A gem that have been hanging onto for more than 8 months now: The Case for Contamination by Kwame Anthony Appiah from the first New York Times magazine for 2006.
+ Balancing Act is carrying a story on an initiative by the Kenyan Government to get another link to the internet backbone. The big news in this is that the project will be open to public subscriptions which is a very good thing as it implies that it will not leave the government saddled with a huge debt.
I am not sure what this means for EASSy but it does not bode well for that project that seems to be pretty much stalled at this point.
(via Eric Osiakwan’s blog. The Balancing Act link is only good for about a week then the article goes behind their paywall.)

+ Sitting while black: an update.
Sokari Ekine at blacklooks.org who won Deutsche Welle Radio’s Best English Weblog user award in November 2006 has been carrying a story about Ngugi wa Thiongo, a UofC Irvine professor and acclaimed writer of Kenyan extraction formerly with the New York University was apparently kicked out of a restaurant veranda at the Hotel Vitale , San Fransisco where he was staying while promoting his new book by hotel staff for “sitting while black”.
(via Black Looks.)
She gets a comment today from an anonymous staff member at the hotel who reckons that Ngugi deserved what he got since he was “dreadlocked” and looked out of place at the hotel which has standards to maintain.

+ A sort of homecoming. Still trying to figure out what I think about this.
Strictly for fun (My fondness for ellipses continues to grow.)
+ A little piece of history: The Aga Khan in East Africa - 1966 to 1981.
+ Who really absolutely could not see this coming? Google OS.
+ Cool new game: Line Rider.
You draw a “track” and have a chracter ride a sled on it obeying the rules of gravity. Some of the better rides have videos on YouTube and are just awesome. Try these two out for example.
You can download the application to create the games via deviant art here.

+ Do you like the show “The Office”? Not the tepid imitation they have in the States but the original UK version? Well, you will enjoy this. This pair just seems to bumble on from mess to mess, stereotyping and offending all equally. They move from one inopportune statement to next, only pausing to remove foot from mouth so that they can re-insert it in a more uncomfortable position.
But they are very very funny if you fancy what the English pass off as humor.
+ Precision in language: can anyone relate to this?
